Train Services : 24 hours before to train departure, railways will release final passenger charts with confirmed seats.

Train Services : According to The Pioneer, Indian Railways has begun publishing final passenger charts 24 hours before scheduled departure, a considerable departure from the present practice of issuing charts four hours in advance. An official announcement is expected once the Railway Board has reviewed the feasibility findings.

Train Services : Pilot rollout under the Bikaner Division

The new method is being deployed as a pilot project by the Bikaner Division of the Western Railway Zone. The experiment began on June 6th and is scheduled to be completed within a week. According to the feasibility analysis, the plan might be extended to other divisions around the country.

According to railway sources, this program is meant to assist travelers, particularly those traveling from afar, in better planning their trips and avoiding last-minute stress. It would also allow customers with waitlisted tickets to reconsider or reschedule their trips a day in advance.

Easy boarding at intermediate stations.

The measure also aims to make it easier for passengers to board en-route at stations that are not designated as official stops for certain premium trains. For example, travelers from Aligarh intending to join the New Delhi-Kolkata Rajdhani Express, which does not stop in Aligarh, should arrange their trip through Delhi or Kanpur .

Review and growth plans.

The ongoing trial program will be evaluated for both passenger convenience and potential operational benefits. A railway official quoted in the story stated that a thorough evaluation is ongoing, and suggestions will be made to the Railway Board for further action. However, the current method of ticket availability and on-the-spot bookings will be maintained during the test phase.

Tatkal regulations tightened to prevent fraud.

Separately, the Railways has tightened the criteria for booking Tatkal tickets. Booking Tatkal tickets from IRCTC now requires Aadhaar-based e-verification. Passengers whose IRCTC accounts are connected to Aadhaar would have priority access during the first ten minutes of Tatkal booking. Even authorized agents will not be able to access bookings during this initial window. The policy is intended to dissuade touts and give real travelers a better chance of getting verified tickets.

The current charting system

Currently, the initial passenger chart is often generated four hours before the train departs (or the night before for early morning trains), with a final chart provided 30 minutes before departure. The final chart reallocates unsold quota seats to general or Tatkal quotas, while waiting list tickets may be upgraded to RAC or confirmed status.

Under current rules, completely confirmed e-tickets cannot be cancelled after charting, whereas fully waitlisted e-tickets are automatically cancelled. RAC tickets are considered confirmed for boarding but are not entitled for refunds unless cancelled according to appropriate procedures.
