Telecom companies ought to provide 3G, 4G, and 5G coverage maps to enable users make informed decisions

Telecom : All of India’s major telecom operators offer 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G mobile services. However, it is difficult to determine which of these operators’ services are available in a specific place. Considering this issue, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has requested that all Indian telecom carriers produce geospatial coverage maps of the geographical areas where they provide wireless voice and broadband services.

Government stated that Telecom operators can incorporate these coverage map

The regulatory body has urged mobile network providers to include coverage maps on their websites. These maps should indicate where their wireless services—such as 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G—are available to clients. The government also stated that telecom operators can incorporate these coverage maps into their mobile apps for both Android and iPhone customers.

TRAI requires that each company include a link to their network map on the main page of their website, clearly visible and easily accessible with a single click. These coverage maps should indicate customers where they may anticipate to receive service, based on real-world data or established methods for estimating coverage. The maps will show coverage for several forms of technologies, such as 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G, with a specific color scheme to indicate signal strength in those locations.

TRAI sets out criteria for developing coverage maps

The TRAI sets out criteria for developing coverage maps that illustrate where mobile networks operate. These guidelines establish the (minimum signal strength) required to define the outer limits of an operator’s network coverage. This ensures that the maps appropriately reflect the locations where mobile service is available.

The new advisory is part of the TRAI’s quality of service regulations for telecom operators and will assist users in making an informed decision when selecting a telecom operator. The TRAI stated in an annexure to its regulation to operators that information on mobile network coverage is critical for quality of service (QoS).

They emphasized that expecting high quality of service in locations lacking coverage is impractical. Furthermore, they stated that having a service-specific geographic coverage map available on a service provider’s website would help consumers make informed selections.
