Ravichandran Ashwin Makes History, Becoming the First Bowler in the Whole World To…

Ravichandran Ashwin: Today, top Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin became the first bowler in history to bowl out at least 50 batters in every one of the three World Test Championship (WTC) editions. The 38-year-old Tamil Nadu spinner, who is ranked first in the ICC Test bowling rankings, achieved the milestone by collecting his second wicket in the ongoing second Test against Bangladesh at Green Park in Kanpur.

He dismissed Shakib Al Hasan for nine runs on the last delivery of the 56th over, increasing his wicket total to 50 for the WTC 2023-25.

Ashwin, the second-highest wicket-taker in WTC history, removed 71 batters in 14 matches during the 2019-21 cycle. He dismissed 61 batters in 13 games during the 2021-23 season, while he has 50 wickets in ten matches this season.

In two of the three WTC versions played thus far, Australia’s Nathan Lyon, Pat Cummins, and New Zealand’s Tim Southee have all dismissed 50 or more batters.

Ashwin, with 182 wicket in 37 WTC matches, needs six more to break Lyon’s total of 187 dismissals and become the WTC’s all-time leading wicket-taker.

If Ashwin takes two more wickets in the present match, he will surpass Australia’s Josh Hazlewood’s record and become the most successful wicket-taker in WTC 2023-25 history. Hazlewood has struck out 51 batters in 11 matches this season.

Ashwin’s second wicket in Bangladesh’s first innings also helped him tie veteran Indian pacer Zaheer Khan’s record for the most wickets in India-Bangladesh tests.
