38-year-old R Ashwin suddenly retired in the middle of the series against Australia

R Ashwin, India’s best off-spinner, startled the cricketing world on Today by announcing his sudden retirement in the middle of a Test series against Australia. Ashwin retired as India’s second-highest Test wicket-taker, with 537 scalps in 106 games, trailing only Anil Kumble (619 wickets). While announcing the news, the spin icon stated that he still has a “bit of punch left” in him and will continue to play club cricket.

“I will not take up much of your time. “Today will be my last day as an Indian cricketer,” Ashwin stated in a joint press conference with skipper Rohit Sharma after the drew third Test in Brisbane.

R Ashwin took one wicket in Adelaide

In the day-night Test in Adelaide, the 38-year-old took one wicket. He was dropped from the third Test at the Gabba to make way for Ravindra Jadeja in the playing XI.

“This will be my final day as an Indian cricketer at the international level. I believe I still have some punch in me as a cricketer, but I would want to showcase it in club cricket, considering this will be my final day (in international cricket). I’ve had a lot of fun and made a lot of memories with Rohit and our other teammates. We’re the final OGs in the dressing room. I have a lot of people to thank, including the BCCI, my teammates, and all of the coaches,” Ashwin stated at India’s post-match media statement.

“He was confident in his decision. After Ashwin exited the stage, Rohit stated, “We should stick to what he wants.

He was seen sharing an emotional interaction with star batter Virat Kohli in the dressing room hours before the news.
