India vs England T20Is : Mohammed Shami has returned to the Indian cricket team for the five-T20I series against England, which begins on January 22. The top bowler has not played for the national team since the November 19 ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia. Since then, he had been nursing ailments and even had ankle surgery. He was recently ruled out of the India-Australia Test series after the BCCI determined that a swelling in his knee required more tests.
Shami had been performing for Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy over the last few months.
However, there were a few shocks in the BCCI squad selection. Rishabh Pant has not been selected for the T20I series, which will be headed by Suryakumar Yadav. The two wicketkeepers are Dhruv Jurel and Sanju Samson. The BCCI did not explain why Pant was disregarded.

All-rounder Shivam Dube was also excluded, but India’s new hero, Nitish Kumar Reddy, was chosen.
The squad also includes Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh as pacers. Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, and Washington Sundar compose the spin department. Aside from Suryakumar Yadav, the other prominent batters in the squad are Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, and Rinku Singh.
Mohammed Shami’s presence in the T20I series against England shows that the fast bowler is a strong contender for a position in the Champions Trophy. After losing the Border Gavaskar Trophy, the Indian cricket team will be anxious to win the ICC Champions Trophy. Mohammed Shami’s inclusion in the lineup will strengthen India’s attack.
According to reports, the BCCI has requested an extension from the ICC due to the unveiling of India’s Champions Trophy roster. However, the roster for India’s T20I side for the England series is expected to be revealed soon.
Though the ICC enables teams to make adjustments one month after the provisional squad is released, it appears that the BCCI will need extra time to settle the roster for the tournaments in Pakistan and the UAE.
