According to Hindu traditions, bathing in the sacred river on Maghi Purnima is extremely auspicious. This ancient ceremony is thought to cleanse both past and present misdeeds. After taking a bath, devotees pay alms in order to purify their spirits. On this day, devotees worship Lord Vishnu and Lord Hanuman and seek their blessings. Magh Purnima is regarded a holy day for spiritual and religious ceremonies. According to mythology, during this month, deities descend from heaven to earth and live on the Ganges’ banks. This auspicious day is commemorated by the ‘Magh Mela’ and ‘Kumbh Mela’, where hundreds of devotees converge to take a holy dip in the Ganges and bathe in the mystical spirit of Maghi Purnima.
Magh Purnima 2025: Rituals
On Magha Purnima, devotees practice a variety of rituals such as washing, charity, homa, fasting, and chanting. On this day, devotees worship Lord Vishnu by offering Shradh-tarpan and donating to the destitute. To follow the Maghi Purnima Vrat, take a holy bath before sunrise and offer arghya to the Sun God while reciting the Surya Mantra.
After bathing, believers worship Lord Madhusudan/Lord Krishna and swear to fast. During the day, they feed and donate to needy people and Brahmins while also performing dakshina. Sesame and black sesame seeds are specifically donated to charities, while black sesame seeds are used in havan to respect ancestors.
Devotees repeat the Gayatri Mantra, also known as the ‘Om Namo Narayan’ mantra, 108 times in a row, seeking spiritual progress and rewards. Devotees follow these practices to observe the Maghi Purnima Vrat, purifying their souls and connecting with the divine.
