Mamata Banerjee : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited and addressed the medics who are conducting a sit-in on Saturday, taking an unexpected step to end the standoff between her government and the protesters.
The medical professionals have been protesting since a trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Clinic in Kolkata last month, and they held a sit-in outside Swasthya Bhavan, the West Bengal Department of Health headquarters, on Tuesday. Since then, there have been attempts to hold a meeting between the state administration and the doctors, but they have stalled, most recently due to the protestors’ demand for live streaming of the talks.

Ms. Banerjee arrived at the protest site on Monday in a friendly tone, requesting permission to speak with the doctors. During the shouts, she addressed them in Bengali, saying, “Please allow me to speak for five minutes before continuing with your slogans—it is your democratic right to express yourself.” I’ve been waiting a long time to speak with you. Despite my security officials’ advise, I’ve come here to support your demonstration. I recognize, having been active in student movements myself, that my position is not as significant as yours. You braved the rain all night, and I, too, felt distressed, keeping me awake.
She acknowledged that the protests had been ongoing for more than a month and asked the doctors to return to work, assuring them that the government would listen to their concerns.
“I will be looking into the demands; I do not govern the country single-handedly.” I will speak with the chief secretary, the home secretary, and the director general of police. Those found to be guilty will face the penalty. I demand justice for Tilottama (the name given to the raped and murdered woman). I will use your platform to request that the CBI speed up the probe. I suggest that you allow me some time to examine your demands.”If you have trust for me, please come and talk with me; I will review your requests,” she said to the physicians.
