Arvind Kejriwal : Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s statement on Sunday that he would leave from his top office has spurred conjecture about his probable successor, with numerous senior AAP leaders’ names circulating.
According to reports, incumbent Delhi lawmakers like as Atishi, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Kailash Gahlot, Gopal Rai, and Imran Hussain are among those who could succeed him.
It is also possible that Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, will take the position. Some leaders have stated that a Dalit leader could be nominated as the next Chief Minister, but have not named any specific names.
The AAP convenor has ruled out the notion of his former deputy, Manish Sisodia, taking over and assured that an AAP member will occupy his role until the elections are done.
The Delhi Assembly’s current term will finish on February 11, 2025.The previous assembly election in Delhi was conducted on February 8, 2020. In the 70-member assembly, the AAP won 62 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 8.
Meanwhile, Sisodia has said that he will campaign with Kejriwal, seeking votes based on honesty, and that he will not take up any official position until he receives a clean chit from the people.
Atishi stands out among the front-runners for the position of chief minister because she manages several vital portfolios, including education, finance, revenue, and law.
Kejriwal had asked her to replace him in hoisting the tricolor on Independence Day. However, this nomination was denied, and Gahlot was appointed instead by the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
PDT Achary, former Lok Sabha secretary general, claimed that the Election Commission was not “duty bound” to support Kejriwal’s proposal for early polls. He went on to explain that if the chief minister resigns, the entire cabinet must follow suit, and a new regime must be established, because LG would require the council of ministers’ assistance and advice to function well.
On February 16, Arvind Kejriwal took the oath of office as Chief Minister for the third time since winning the election in 2013. According to a report in the News Paper, authorities from the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer’s office stated that the ECI announced the special summary revision of the picture electoral record in August, with the state elections scheduled for February 2025.
The continuing effort is set to complete in early January 2025, with the final publication of electoral rolls expected for January 6, 2025.
According to the AAP national convener, he will become cm and Manish Sisodia’s deputy “only if individuals say we are sincere”. A party official said on Monday that Kejriwal and Sisodia will meet today. This will be the first meeting following their decision. The meeting is also likely to include a debate on the next chief minister.
The meeting will be conducted in the chief minister’s official residence in the Civil Lines neighborhood. Kejriwal, who was released on bail from Tihar Jail on Friday in the excise policy fraud case, has stated that he will convene an AAP MLA meeting in a few days and that one of his party colleagues will take over as chief minister. His surprising announcement sparked speculation about his wife Sunita and ministers Atishi and Gopal Rai as potential replacements.
