Anti Depressants : According to a study, long-term antidepressant use can raise the risk of sudden cardiac death.

Anti Depressants : A recent study discovered a disturbing connection between the usage of antidepressants (AD) and an elevated risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD), particularly among individuals who had been taking the medicine for a long time. Scientists from Denmark conducted the study, which was presented at the European Society of Cardiology’s EHRA 2025 convention.

Sudden cardiac death is described as an unexpected fatality caused by a heart condition that usually happens within one hour of the onset of symptoms or within 24 hours in unwitnessed situations.

In a recent study, researchers looked at mortality among people aged 18 to 90 in 2010, reviewing death certificates and autopsy data.

According to the study, persons who used antidepressant drugs had a considerably higher risk of sudden cardiac death than those who did not use them.

The cohort of 643,999 people who had been taken antidepressants was compared to the general population, which had 4.3 million inhabitants. There were 1,981 incidences of sudden cardiac death among those taking antidepressants, compared to 4,021 in the unexposed group.

SCD risk was increased across all age categories for those who had taken antidepressants, with significant differences depending on the duration of exposure.

When the data was controlled for age, gender, and comorbidities, people who had been using antidepressants for 1 to 5 years had a 56% higher risk of sudden cardiac death than the general population.

Those who had been using the drugs for six years or longer had a 2.2 times increased risk.

The study also discovered that younger people were more adversely influenced by lengthier antidepressant use.

For those aged 30-39 years, the risk of sudden cardiac death was roughly three times higher with one to five years of antidepressant use, and up to five times higher with six or more years.

In older patients, particularly those aged 50 to 59, the risk of sudden cardiac death increased after 1 to 5 years of antidepressant medication and quadrupled after six or more years. However, the risk appeared to level out in people over 70 years old, with less of a difference between shorter and longer exposure times.
