Yoon imposed an emergency martial law Tuesday night, but it was repealed early Wednesday after the parliament voted against it.
On Wednesday, the main liberal opposition Democratic Party and five other minor parties filed an impeachment resolution against Yoon, which is scheduled to be voted on Saturday afternoon.
Han Dong-hoon, the leader of the government People Power Party, told reporters that President Yoon’s early resignation is unavoidable, stating that the President cannot discharge his duties regularly under the current conditions.
Han stated that he will strive to prevent people from suffering by closely discussing people’s lives and important concerns with the Prime Minister.
Lee Jae-myung, head of the main opposition Democratic Party, expressed disappointment with Yoon’s speech, which failed to live up to people’s expectations and fuelled their feelings of betrayal and fury.
Lee stressed that the only way to calm the situation would be for Yoon to resign or be impeached, and vowed to do everything in his power to allow Yoon to do so.
