US law : Donald Trump is expected to become the 47th President of the United States in January, after defeating Kamala Harris in the Electoral College with a large margin.
Trump got 295 electoral votes to Harris’s 226, more than the 270 needed to win.
This victory begins Trump’s second (non-consecutive) term in office.
Could he possibly run again in 2028? As it is, the United States Constitution prohibits him from seeking a third term.

What does the US law say?
The 22nd Amendment of the United States Constitutionally restricts presidential terms to two.
The regulations specify that “no person shall be selected to the office of the President a maximum of twice.”
Furthermore, anyone who has held the post or served as President for more than two years of another person’s term is only eligible for election once.

The US Constitution did not always restrict presidential terms.
The US Constitution did not originally specify a limit on presidential terms.
Alexander Hamilton explained that the president “is to be selected for four years; and is to be re-eligible as often as the voters… find him worthy of their respect.”

However, George Washington, the first president, established a precedent by stepping down after two terms, influencing future presidents until term limits were explicitly implemented.
How the amendment was created
Except for Ulysses S Grant and Theodore Roosevelt, who both failed to seek extra terms, the majority of presidents followed Washington’s two-term rule.
Franklin D. Roosevelt defied convention by serving four terms (1932, 1936, 1940, and 1944) before dying early in the fourth.
His vice president, Harry S Truman, then established the Hoover Commission to assist in shaping government changes.
This resulted in the 22nd Amendment, which was introduced in 1947 and approved in 1951 and legally limits presidents to two terms.
