US Defense Secretary : The United States has deployed 1,000 active-duty soldiers to assist with Hurricane Helene recovery efforts

US Defense Secretary : US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin approved the presence of up to 1,000 active-duty soldiers to assist in transporting food, water, and other critical supplies “over the final mile to the breaking point of necessities” to hurricane-affected residents.

On October 2, US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia to evaluate the devastation caused by the hurricane in the US Southeast. Karine Jean-Pierre, White House press secretary, announced that the president will visit devastated towns in Florida and Georgia on Thursday.

Before departure Washington, Biden instructed the Department of Defense to immediately send up to 1,000 active-duty troops to assist with recovery and response efforts, including food delivery to storm-affected regions. The troops will join 6,000 National Guard men and more than 4,800 federal employees who are distributed across numerous states devastated by the hurricane.

The storm reached landfall in Florida before moving into Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina over the course of the weekend.

The hurricane claimed at least 155 people, displaced a number of households, and left millions without power.Al Jazeera stated that people had died in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee.

According to the New York Times, Vice President Kamala Harris stated in Georgia that the federal government would fund the entire cost of debris removal and other emergency protection measures for three months to assist the state in its recovery.

US Defense Secretary Austin responded to US President Joe Biden’

On Wednesday, Defense Secretary Austin responded to US President Joe Biden’s statement by saying, “As @POTUS stated, we will provide every tool at our disposal to save families and help those in urgent require, and the Ministry of Defense is going to keep doing our part.”

“At my order, @SecDef has just approved the deployment of up to 1,000 active-duty soldiers to support ongoing hurricane response and recovery activities. Hurricane Helene was a historically large storm. “Our response will continue to meet this moment,” the US president remarked on X.

Following this, President Biden elaborated on the deployment in a White House statement made on Wednesday, saying, “Even before Hurricane Helene came, I urged my team to do everything they could to protect civilians in the storm’s path. I rallied the whole federal government to provide every available resource to the battle to save lives and help those in essential need.”

The deployed soldiers will support the North Carolina National Guard in providing life-saving supplies, including food, water, and medicine, to isolated towns in North Carolina.

“They will be reinforcing hundreds of North Carolina National Guard members sent under state control as part of the answers,” according to a statement released by the governor.

Furthermore, the National Guard has placed more than 6,500 Guardsmen, hundreds of High Waters Vehicles, and dozens of helicopter and rescue boats from 12 various states in State-Active-Duty status, according to a Department of Defense release.

“Hurricane Helene was a remarkable hurricane. My heart goes out to everybody who has suffered unimaginable loss. We are here for you, and we will stay for as long as necessary,” President Biden vowed.

Biden also published another picture following an aerial tour of Western North Carolina to assess the damage, stating that “What I saw was heartbreaking.” Back on ground level, we observe neighbors helping neighbors, volunteers and laborers standing together side by side, and people leaning against one another in solidarity. “That’s America.”

Furthermore, while speaking to the rescue personnel, Biden praised their bravery and referred to them as ‘heroes.’

“To the men and women who embraced the conversation and risk their lives in North Carolina, those who kept loved ones behind to help a struggling town: you are nothing short of heroes. God bless every aspect of you. “And may you keep the faith,” Biden said to X.

Hurricane Helene, a Category 4 storm, caused some of the worst flooding in centuries after making landfall on September 26, destroying houses and automobiles and destroying people in the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Virginia.
