UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs : According to a statement released by the Indian Embassy in Austria on Friday, India has been selected to chair the 68th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND).
India’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Vienna, Ambassador Shambhu S. Kumaran, formally took over as Chairman of the esteemed UN forum.
Regarding drug-related issues, the CND is the main UN policy-making body.

Monitoring worldwide drug trends, assisting member governments in developing well-rounded policies, and supervising the application of the main international drug conventions are among its mandates.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), which has its headquarters in Vienna, is governed by the CND, one of the functional commissions of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

The Embassy announced in a post on X that India has been selected to chair the Commission on Narcotic Drugs’ (CND) 68th session. Today, Shambhu Kumaran formally became the new chairman of CND. It has never before been appointed to chair this significant UN body.

The statement reaffirms India’s commitment to resolving international challenges through established multilateral processes and its expanding leadership position on the world arena.

India would be expected to represent the Global South’s interests as Chair, in keeping with its responsibility to advance developing countries’ interests and viewpoints in international debates.
Additionally, India would like to build on the CND’s current efforts to enhance understanding and dialogue on drug policy challenges, particularly integrating emerging economies’ concerns with industrialised nations’ aspirations to encourage balanced and comprehensive approaches to this important subject.
It is expected that the CND’s agenda for the upcoming year will centre on strengthening international cooperation to tackle key concerns like drug trafficking, substance abuse, and the corresponding social and health consequences, as well as the accessibility of internationally controlled substances for scientific and medical applications. The statement further stated that India will continue to work with other CND members to promote equitable, inclusive, and sustainable approaches on all of these concerns by emphasising multilateral dialogue and evidence-based solutions.
