Trump sparked outrage on social media by publishing a map that showed Canada as part of the United States, implying annexation. His statements and posts have elicited significant reactions from Canadian officials, indicating a possible strain in US-Canada relations.
Trump has recently expressed a desire to acquire or annex other regions, including Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal. Tuesday, he would not rule out using military force to take Greenland and the Panama Canal.
While he has not made comparable claims for Canada, he has stated that the country is currently—or will soon become—the “51st state” under his rule.

Trump released maps on his Truth Social account
Trump released maps on his Truth Social account that depicted Canada as part of the United States. One photograph, which solely showed the United States and Canada, was labelled “United States.” Another map depicted both countries wrapped in the colours of the US flag, with the phrase, “Oh Canada!”
In another tweet, Trump stated that many Canadians want to join the United States, stating that a merger could eliminate tariffs, lower taxes, and give greater security against foreign threats. He also said that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s possible resignation is related to the country’s inability to “stay afloat” without US assistance.

Canadian officials have forcefully criticised Trump’s remarks. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly criticised his remarks, saying on X (previously Twitter) that they demonstrate a lack of awareness of Canada’s strength as a country.
She stated Canada’s financial and societal resiliency, vowing to resist any challenges.
