Trump says Europe is next in the tariff war, and he cuts South Africa’s funding.

On Sunday, a day after imposing 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada and a 10% levy on China, US President Donald Trump said he will impose tariffs on European Union trade “pretty soon.”

Here Are the Most Important Points on Trump’s Trade War:

  • Donald Trump stated that he will “definitely” impose fresh tariffs on the European Union, claiming that they had “really taken advantage of us”. “I wouldn’t say there’s an exact date, but it’s going to be fairly soon,” he told reporters, stressing his concern about the United States’ trade deficit with the EU’s 27 members.
  • Trump has already threatened EU tariffs, most recently saying on Friday that he will “absolutely” apply them.”The European Union has been treating us horribly,” he informed media in the Oval Office. Experts believe the trade war is likely to hinder US GDP and raise prices.
  • However, the EU stated on Sunday that it would “respond firmly” if the US President imposed tariffs. “The EU would react firmly to any trading nation that unlawfully or arbitrarily applies tariffs on EU goods,” a spokesperson stated on Sunday, in reference to Trump’s tariffs on Canada, China, and Mexico.
  • Trump’s warning to the EU comes as his close supporter, Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest person, enters European politics. “European people, join the MEGA movement!” “Make Europe Great Again!” Musk said on his social media site X on Saturday, referencing Trump’s campaign slogan “Make America Great Again.”
  • Donald Trump stated on Sunday that he would be meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexico “tomorrow morning.”
  • He also blamed South Africa of “confiscating” land and “treating certain classes of people very badly,” and declared that he would suspend any further financing to the country pending an investigation.
  • Earlier Sunday, Trump stated that his tariffs on important trading partners may cause economic “pain” for Americans, but that it would be “worth the price” to protect US interests.
  • “Will there be any pain?” “Yes, maybe (and maybe not!)” he commented on his Truth Social Network page. “But we will Make Americans Great Again, and it will all be worth the cost that must be paid.”
  • “Anyone who loves and trusts in the United States of America supports tariffs. They should not have ceased in favour of the Income Tax System in 1913. “The response to tariffs has been FANTASTIC,” he wrote in another post.
  • While Canada and Mexico promised retaliation, China announced that it will challenge Trump’s tariffs in the World Trade Organisation.
