US President Donald Trump threatened to suspend Harvard University’s tax-exempt status on Tuesday after the university refused to comply with a list of White House demands, including reducing campus activism and eliminating its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.
In a Truth Social post, Trump threatened to tax Harvard as a ‘political entity’ if it continued to promote what he called ‘political, ideological, and terrorist-inspired disease’.
“Perhaps Harvard could lose its Tax Exempt Status and be Taxed as a Political Entity if it keeps pushing political, ideological, and terrorist inspired/supporting” Sickness? Remember that tax exempt status is entirely dependent on operating in the public interest.” Trump stated this in a Truth Social post.

The Trump administration has stated that it will suspend more than USD 2.2 billion in grants and contracts for Harvard University, citing the institution’s failure to comply with federal demands aimed at limiting student activity. The move follows Harvard’s announcement on Monday that it would not comply with the administration’s controversial demands. These include implementing “merit-based” policies in admissions and hiring, conducting a comprehensive audit of faculty, students, and leadership’s diversity stances, and prohibiting the use of face masks on campus, which appears to be aimed at pro-Palestinian demonstrators.
In a letter to the university last Friday (April 11), the administration also ordered that Harvard discontinue recognition or funding for any student group or organization that it believes supports criminal behavior, violence, or harassment. Notably, these demands were a revision of a previous communication sent to the university.
