Pope Francis : The Vatican stated Monday that physicians have adjusted Pope Francis’ treatment for a respiratory tract infection to address a “complex clinical situation,” and he will stay in the hospital for as long as is required.
The 88-year-old pontiff had been suffering from a respiratory ailment for over a week before being hospitalised to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Friday.
The outcomes from the tests carried out in recent days and now indicate a polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract, which has led to a further adjustment of the treatment,” according to a brief text.
“All tests performed up to today indicate a complex medical issue that needs an appropriate hospital stay,” it stated.
The Vatican said in an evening update that Pope Francis is remained “stable” and does not have a temperature.

Despite being hospitalised, the pope has continued to phone Gaza’s sole Catholic parish, according to a local priest in the territory. He has already indicated that he has been in constant contact with the parish since the conflict in Israel and Gaza began in October 2023, News reported.
“He told us ‘I am not comfortable’ and you could see he was tired,” local priest Father Gabriel Romanelli said on Saturday during a video call with the Pope on Italian state broadcaster Rai.

Francis said, “A few days (in hospital) and I’ll be back,” according to fellow Argentine Romanelli, who also made the joke that Francis was “not an easy patient for doctors, because he is always speaking, always really active.”
The Vatican says the Pope worked and reviewed papers on Monday.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni declined to say whether the pope had a bacterial or viral infection, according to Media.
Antibiotics can heal bacterial illnesses, but viruses cannot. Viruses normally have to run their course, but the patient can be treated with different medications to reduce fever or help their body fight the infection.
Polymicrobial infections are those caused by two or more microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
According to Rev. Dr. Andrea Vicini, a Jesuit priest and medical doctor, polymicrobial is a catch-all phrase that does not describe the underlying aetiology of an infection.
Vicini added that the Vatican had earlier on Monday said the pope ate breakfast, suggesting he was not wearing a respirator, and that he was only aware of the pope’s condition via the Vatican’s public remarks.
“It also means that the body is not so weak that it cannot take and digest food,” Boston College professor Vicini added.

pope’s physicians had previously advised complete rest
His doctors had earlier recommended total rest, so the pope was unable to lead a special Mass for artists to celebrate the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year or offer his weekly prayer to pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday.
Pilgrims touring the Vatican on Monday expressed their confidence that the Pope will recover quickly.
“We surely hope he gets better immediately,” said Rev. Tyler Carter, a Catholic priest from the USA. “He is our father and our shepherd, and so we want his continuous good health and blessing.”
