Senior diplomat : Iran and three European nations — France, Britain, and Germany — have agreed to reopen talks on removing sanctions and addressing Tehran’s nuclear program, according to a senior Iranian diplomat.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, made the announcement on social media platform X, as a new round of talks between Iran, the three countries, and the European Union began in Geneva. The talks are likely to address a wide range of topics, including how the countries interact with one another, as well as regional and global issues, according to Xinhua.

Gharibabadi described the negotiations as “serious, frank, and constructive,” adding that they delved into depth about lifting sanctions and resolving nuclear issues required for a settlement.
“Everybody agreed on the necessity to restart talks on reducing sanctions and Iran’s nuclear program,” he said, adding that striking an agreement requires “a good environment” fostered by all parties.

Senior diplomat last met in Geneva in November 2024
Senior Iranian and European diplomats last met in Geneva in November 2024 to discuss Tehran’s nuclear program, among other issues. Gharibabadi stated that the conversations were open and centred on recent developments between the countries, in the region, and around the world, particularly the nuclear program and the easing of sanctions.
In July 2015, Iran reached a nuclear agreement with foreign powers, agreeing to curtail its nuclear activities in exchange for relaxing sanctions. However, the US pulled out of the deal in May 2018 and reimposed sanctions, leading Tehran to lower its own commitments.
Talks to restore the 2015 pact started in Vienna in April 2021, but have made little headway after multiple rounds of discussions.
In December, Germany, the UK, and France released a statement expressing “extreme concern” over Iran’s enrichment capacity.
“We strongly encourage Iran to reverse these steps, and to immediately halt its nuclear escalation,” said an official statement.
The statement came after Rafael Grossi, the head of the UN nuclear inspectorate, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), announced that Iran was enriching uranium to 60% purity, which is close to the 90% threshold needed to manufacture an weapon.
