There was an expectant wait to find out who the new Pope would be, as distinctive white smoke billowed out of the chimney high above St Peter’s Square in the evening, indicating that the Cardinals’ conclave had chosen Pope Francis’ successor, who died last month.
As they awaited a decision, the clergy and laity were ecstatic, and everyone was watching from the balcony for the first appearance of the new head of the Roman Catholic Church.

The new Pope addressed the applauding throng in Italian and said, “Peace be with all of you.”

“Brothers and sisters dearest, this is the first greeting of Christ resurrected. I’d like to extend a peaceful greeting to your family, wherever you may be. “May you find peace,” he said, according to the BBC.
The inconclusive ballots this morning prompted the 133 cardinals in attendance at this conclave, which is being held in the Sistine Chapel, to meet again after lunch.
A new pope must have a two-thirds majority, which corresponds to 89 votes in this conclave. According to the BBC, the last few conclaves took an average of three days and seven ballots.
