Pakistan pollution in the environment: Toxic fog drives over 1.9 million people to hospitals every month.

Pakistan pollution in the environment : Over the last month, more than 1.91 million people in Pakistan have been taken to government hospitals with respiratory diseases, showing the country’s severe impact from hazardous air pollution. The problem has had an especially severe impact on Pakistan’s Punjab region, where smog and hazardous air quality levels have triggered a public health emergency.

Hospitals around Punjab have been inundated, with Lahore having the largest number of cases. Toxic smog caused almost 75,000 people to seek medical attention on a single day, putting additional strain on the healthcare system. Lahore recorded 133,429 respiratory disease cases in the past month, including 5,577 asthma patients. Lahore also cared for 5,455 of the province’s 13,862 heart disease patients and 491 of its 5,141 stroke victims. The problem has gotten worse in the last week, with 449,045 respiratory illnesses, 30,146 asthma cases, 2,225 heart disease patients, and 1,400 stroke victims.

The government has implemented a number of emergency measures, including school, college, and park closures, market hours restrictions, and prohibitions on polluting cars and industrial activity. Despite these efforts, air pollution in cities such as Lahore and Multan continues to worsen. Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) often surpasses dangerous levels, frequently exceeding 1,000, while Multan recently reported an alarming AQI of over 2,000.

Residents are trying to deal with the smog’s health consequences. Many people find that remaining indoors provides little respite, and air purifiers remain expensive luxuries. Public and private schools have been ordered to close till November 24, and authorities have also imposed a three-day lockdown in Lahore and Multan to combat pollution. However, these steps have only provided modest relief.

Healthcare personnel are pushed to their limits. Doctors report a large increase in patients, mainly children and the elderly, suffering from respiratory problems, coughing fits, and eye irritation. “This year, smog levels are much worse, and the number of affected patients is far greater,” said Dr Qurat ul Ain, a Lahore-based physician. She recommends that residents wear masks and prevent outdoor exposure.

Pakistan pollution in the environment Reason

The principal causes of smog are industrial emissions, automobile exhaust, and seasonal agricultural stubble burning, all aggravated by sluggish weather conditions. Alia Haider, a climate activist, described the city as “stuck in its own poison” and criticized a lack of meaningful long-term solutions. As haze continues to blanket Pakistan’s major cities, millions of people remain at danger, waiting for significant action to address the deteriorating environmental disaster.
