Following their hour-long meeting in which US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed all aspects of India-US bilateral relations, the two leaders held a joint news conference in which they answered questions from the international media.
With Donald Trump declaring sweeping reciprocal tariffs for all countries as a tit-for-tat trade strategy hours before his meeting with Prime Minister Modi, one of the concerns posed to President Trump was who is a harder and better negotiator: him or Prime Minister Modi. The US President quickly said, “He is a much harsher negotiator than I am, as well as a much better negotiator. There is not even a competition.”

Speaking particularly about reciprocal tariffs, President Trump stated, “It is only fair that taxes and tariffs are reciprocal.” Explaining his argument, he stated that “many attempts have been made” by the US to cut duties on US exports, “but since that has not worked out, we have now decided to reciprocate in the exact same way – something that has never been done before.”
Donald Trump has made trade and tariffs a primary priority in his quest to “make America great again”. On many occasions, Trump has stated that “tariff” is his favourite term in the dictionary and that he believes they are critical to the restoration of the US economy.
Even on Thursday evening (US Eastern Time), Donald Trump stated, “We (the United States) had been a fantastic economy, the number one in the world – and still are – but the economy has been under stress since Covid. We’ll resurrect it now,” he stated in response to another tariff-related query.

Before the bilateral discussions began, the two leaders talked to the press. Donald Trump lauded PM Modi, saying, “Prime Minister Modi is a great leader,” and promising, “We’re going to make some wonderful trade deals for India and the US.”
Aside from trade and tariffs, the two presidents held a thorough discussion about regional and global security, the India-US defence partnership, foreign investment, energy, technology, education, visas, and immigration.
PM Modi is among the first world leaders to travel to the United States for an official visit to meet with Donald Trump following his election victory. This is PM Modi’s tenth visit to the United States as Prime Minister, and his fourth with Trump as President.
