New York Archdiocese has laid off employees to alleviate the financial burden caused by the sex abuse scandal

New York Archdiocese : The Archdiocese of New York recently announced layoffs of 18 administrative staff personnel as part of measures to address financial issues, which are exacerbated by the ongoing sex abuse scandal in the Roman Catholic Church. The job cuts result in a 4% decrease in the workforce.

In a letter to the New York Archdiocese, Cardinal Timothy Dolan stated

The layoffs are estimated to save the archdiocese about $1.5 million each year. This follows the recent sale of the Cardinal Cooke headquarters building in Midtown Manhattan for nearly $100 million. The archdiocese intends to shift its administrative offices to a smaller facility on Madison Avenue.

Dolan Stated

Dolan stated that the staff decrease “is not a one-time event,” implying that more job cuts could be made. He emphasized that the archdiocese intends to prioritize resources for its parishes, saying, “Our ultimate objective in all of this is to ensure that we can respond as effectively as possible to meet the requirements of the individuals that we are called upon to serve in the ten different counties and nearly 300 parishes that make up this archdiocese.”

According to Dolan, the financial hardship resulting from countless sex abuse lawsuits against the Church is a major worry. The archdiocese is at present engaged in a legal battle with its insurer concerning claim coverage.

“We have worked carefully to settle meritorious cases that are not covered by insurance coverage, in justice to the victims of years past,” Dolan writes in the letter. He emphasized the continuous financial burden of treating over 400 cases through an independent compensation mechanism, as well as an additional 123 instances under the Child Victims Act of 2019.

Dolan stated that the money from the headquarters sale will assist alleviate the financial burden of the sex abuse epidemic, with the sale of other properties also being considered. He emphasized the importance of “strategy and sacrifice,” as well as parish and community support, in ensuring long-term financial stability.
