Muhammad Yunus : During a recent visit to China, Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus pushed Beijing to expand its economic influence in Bangladesh, controversially saying that India’s northeastern states’ landlocked status could be an opportunity. The remark, made during Yunus’ recent four-day tour to China, was shared on social media on Monday.
Yunus, who met President Xi Jinping and inked nine agreements with Beijing during the trip, stated, “The seven states of India, the eastern region of India, are known as the seven sisters. They are a landlocked Indian territory. They have no way of getting to the ocean.”
He described Bangladesh as the “only guardian of the ocean” in the region, claiming that this could be a big opportunity and an extension of the Chinese economy.
So what did India say?
Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s economic advisory council, shared the video on X and questioned Yunus’ reference of India’s northeast area.
“It’s interesting that Yunus is making a public appeal to the Chinese based on the fact that India has seven landlocked states. China is welcome to invest in Bangladesh, but what is the point of seven Indian states being landlocked?” he asked.
