Linda McMahon has been named President-elect Donald Trump’s candidate for Secretary of Education. She had been considered initially for the Commerce Department.
McMahon, a longtime SBA administrator and World Wrestling Entertainment co-founder, will become Education Secretary. Trump had promised to dismantle this organization and delegate its functions to the states.
The Education Department is responsible for supporting public schools, managing federal student aid programs, and obtaining educational data in the United States. Trump has pledged to eliminate much of the federal monitoring.
“We will bring education back to the states that and Linda will lead the way,” Trump stated in a press release on Tuesday.

Who exactly is Linda McMahon?
McMahon led the Small Business Administration from 2017 to 2019 during Trump’s first term. She and her husband, Vince McMahon, co-founded Capitol Wrestling, which is now known as World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), before entering politics.
Most recently, both McMahons were implicated in a complaint alleging “systemic and pervasive abuse” of minor children at the organization.
McMahon has created a reputation for herself in politics, standing as the Republican nominee for the United States Senate in Connecticut in 2010, but losing to Democrat Richard Blumenthal. Despite the loss, McMahon remained as chair of the board of the America First Policy Institute, a conservative research organization founded by Trump advisers in 2021 to advance his agenda. She was also a key member of Trump’s transition team, working alongside billionaire Howard Lutnick, who has been named secretary of commerce.
McMahon praised Trump’s economic accomplishments at the recent Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, saying, “President Trump is a job creator and the best friend American workers have ever had in the White House.”
