North Korea leader Kim Jong Un stated Monday that a new hypersonic missile system used in a test launch would help deter the nation’s Pacific rivals, according to the KCNA state news agency.
The launch was overseen by Kim, who stated, “The hypersonic missile system will safely limit any rivals in the Pacific region that can threaten our country’s security,” according to KCNA.
The test came as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken paid a visit to crucial ally South Korea, the North’s fierce adversary with whom it is still nominally at war.

In a statement, Kim stated that the missile flew for 1,500 kilometres (930 miles) — exceeding the 1,100-kilometer (680-mile) number provided by South Korea’s military — and travelled at 12 times the speed of sound before landing in the water.
“This is clearly a strategy and commitment for self-defence, not an aggressive strategy and action,” Kim pointed out.

However, he said that the missile system’s effectiveness “cannot be ignored around the world,” as it can “deal an important military strike to a rival while effectively breaking any dense defensive barrier.”
The development of the DPRK’s defence capabilities, with the goal of becoming a military power, would be expedited,” Kim added, using the North’s official acronym.

Blinken and his South Korean counterpart Cho Tae-yul blasted the launch at a joint press conference, saying it demonstrated the significance of strengthening a three-way alliance with Japan.
North Korea conducted its first test-fire since US President-elect Donald Trump won the November election.
Its latest launch occurred in November, when it tested what it claimed was its most advanced and powerful solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
