Israel agrees to a peace agreement with Lebanon. Here is what the pact says

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a cease-fire, which is a big development in West Asia. On November 27, at midnight (Israel time), the deal will take effect.

The Security Cabinet of Israel, the country’s top decision-making body under the government, has agreed to the truce. “How long the truce lasts is determined by what happens in Lebanon. We shall strictly enforce the agreement and respond firmly to any violations. “We will remain united until victory,” Prime Minister Netanyahu declared in his post-agreement speech.

“We will accomplish the work of annihilating Hamas, bring home all of our hostages, assure that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel, and securely return the northern citizens home. The war will not finish until we have achieved all of its objectives, including the safe return of the northern residents. And I assure you, it will happen, just as it did in the south,” Mr Netanyahu said.

He then outlined three reasons why Israel responded to the ceasefire :

  • “The first point is to focus on the Iranian danger, which I will not elaborate on.’
  • The second purpose is to give our men a break and replenish supplies. And I say this openly: there have been significant delays in weapon and munitions supply. These delays will be addressed soon. We will receive supplies of modern weaponry that will keep our soldiers safe and provide us with greater strike force to complete the task.
  • The third explanation for the truce is to divide the battle lines and isolate Hamas. Hamas has relied on Hezbollah to fight alongside it from the beginning of the war. Without Hezbollah, Hamas is on its own. We will raise our pressure on Hamas, which will aid us in our noble objective of freeing our hostages.”

For several months, Israel has been at war with the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon. Hezbollah had been targeting Israel with rockets and munitions for more than a year, prompting Tel Aviv’s reprisal. Hezbollah has been supporting Hamas, another Iran-backed militant group it considers an ally.

Israel and Hamas have been at odds since October 2023, when the militants crossed the Israel-Gaza border and abducted Israeli hostages at a concert. Hamas is headquartered in Gaza, where the conflict began after Israel retaliated against the terrorist attack. Since then, the conflict in West Asia, sometimes known as the Middle East, has caused widespread devastation and killed tens of thousands of people in the region.

The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and his security cabinet have agreed to the cease-fire.

Prime Minister Netanyahu has warned, however, that if Hezbollah violates the agreement, Israel would not honour it and will respond with full force. The peace pact was secured thanks to the assistance of the United States and France, and US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron are set to make an official statement soon.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has been dealing closely with top Israeli officials to arrange the truce, which goes into force at midnight tonight.

Here are some of the main points of the Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Agreement:

  • Hezbollah and the other armed militant groups in Lebanese territories will not launch aggressive operations against Israel.
  • In exchange, Israel will refrain from conducting any aggressive military actions against targets in Lebanon (land, air, or sea).
  • Israel and Lebanon recognise the importance of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
  • These obligations do not diminish Israel’s or Lebanon’s natural right to self-defence.
  • Only the Lebanese army and security forces will be permitted to carry firearms or operate in southern Lebanon.
  • The Lebanese government will oversee and control the sale, supply, or manufacture of weapons or associated materials in Lebanon.
  • All illegal establishments involved in the manufacture of weapons or related materials will be demolished.
  • All unlicensed infrastructure and military bases will be decommissioned, and all weapons that do not comply with these pledges will be confiscated.
  • Israel and Lebanon will notify the committee as well as UNIFIL of any potential breaches of these agreements.
  • Lebanon’s official security forces and army will be deployed along all borders, crossing points, and the line that separates the southern region, as outlined in the deployment plan.
  • Israel will gradually withdraw from south of the Blue Line over the course of up to 60 days.
  • The United States will assist indirect talks between Israel and Lebanon to obtain an agreement on recognised land borders.
