Sunita Williams, who was supposed to return in a week after travelling to the ISS on Boeing’s first astronaut mission last year, reached the nine-month mark this month.
Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, two NASA astronauts, have been on the International Space Station since June of last year. They were testing the Boeing Starliner spaceship on its first crewed flight, but it developed propulsion issues and was deemed unsafe to return to Earth.
This Sunday, a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft arrived at the International Space Station to return Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams to Earth, together with another American astronaut and a Russian cosmonaut.

The astronauts, who were meant to return in a week after taking Boeing’s maiden manned journey to the ISS, crossed the nine-month mark earlier this month.
This begs the question of whether Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, like other employees, are compensated for their extended time in space.
Does Sunita Williams get paid extra for her extended stay in space?
Cady Coleman, a former NASA astronaut, claims that astronauts are paid their regular wage but do not earn overtime pay. NASA provides transportation, accommodation, and food, as well as a small daily budget for additional expenses.
“There is some small amount of money per day for incidentals that they end up being legally obligated to pay you,” Coleman told Washingtonian.com.
