In an important step toward modernization and indigenization, the Pakistan Air Force is developing a new fighter aircraft with excellent capabilities.
The new aircraft is expected to be built as a 4.5-generation fighter program, and its design appears to be based on the popular current JF-17 fighter aircraft. Furthermore, according to an IDRW study, the aircraft will be updated with features such as a decreased radar cross section, an infrared search and track (IRST) system, and active electronically scanned array radar.

Pakistan moving away from China?
Earlier, it was thought that the upcoming plane would be a jet powered by two engines. However, recent updates indicate that Pakistan has focused on developing a self-sufficient, indigenous fighter program. Despite a major increase in Chinese financing for Pakistan’s armaments program, there appears to be a concerted attempt to reduce reliance. According to reports, Pakistan’s defence import policy has changed, indicating a desire to minimize reliance on Chinese technology. According to sources, China is concerned about the claimed Pakistani ‘copy’ attempt since it may have an influence on their defense shipments to Pakistan.

“Since the JF-17’s initial to the PAF combat aircraft force, there has been an underlying gap between the fighter’s projected goals and Pakistan’s actual aerospace capability. Basically, while the JF-17 was supposed to be a fighter free of political and technological constraints, the truth was that Pakistan was still reliant on China in important areas, such as subsystems and munitions integration,” Pakistani defense industry specialist Bilal Khan remarked in Quwa.
Discuss the JF-17 Thunder

The Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and China’s Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) developed the PAC JF-17 Thunder, a lightweight, single-engine, multirole combat aircraft. The JF-17 can launch a variety of weapons, including air-to-air, air-to-surface, and anti-ship missiles, guided and unguided bombs, and a 23 mm GSh-23-2 twin-barrel autocannon. The JF-17 Thunder is powered by an afterburning turbofan, either the Guizhou WS-13 or the Klimov RD-93. It can reach Mach 1.6 and is widely regarded as one of the best combat jets in the world. The aircraft was designed largely to answer the Pakistan Air Force’s need for an affordable fighter jet.
