Hashem Safieddine : According to reports, an Israeli airstrike in Beirut killed Hashem Safieddine, Hassan Nasrallah’s probable successor

Hashem Safieddine : An Israeli attack in Beirut on Friday morning apparently targeted Hezbollah chairman Hashem Safieddine. According to Axios correspondent Barak Ravid, an Israeli official said Safieddine, who appears to be a likely successor to dead Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, was struck.

No formal confirmation has been received

Neither Israel nor Hezbollah have issued an official statement confirming the incident as of yet. Reuters also stated that they were unable to comment on the report that surfaced on the social media platform X. Safieddine is an influential member of the Hezbollah command.

Israel struck Hezbollah’s intelligence center in Beirut

On October 3, Israeli troops announced an attack on Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters in Beirut, with a target in the Dahieh district, a famous Hezbollah stronghold. The strike signified a significant intensification in the continuing war. Israel fired 11 airstrikes south of Beirut, intensifying the conflict. According to Lebanon’s main news agency, the hit caused damage in the mountains around the city.

Safieddine, who leads Hezbollah’s executive council, is an important role in the group’s military activities and was branded a terrorist by the US in 2017.

What is the identity of Hashem Safieddine?

Hashem Safieddine, the founder and leader of Hezbollah, was born in southern Lebanon in the early 1960s. During Lebanon’s civil war in the 1980s, he joined the Shiite Muslim group and soon ascended through the ranks, joining Nasrallah.

Safieddine had a number of responsibilities, including political, spiritual, and cultural leadership, as well as supervising the group’s military operations at one point. Safieddine, like Nasrallah, frequently wore a black turban, indicating his rank as a revered Shiite cleric.

He was promoted to the group’s highest council in 1995 and shortly after became the commander of Hezbollah’s military operations. Safieddine was elected to lead the party’s executive council in 1998, a post Nasrallah held before to becoming Hezbollah’s secretary-general in 1992.

Safieddine, like Nasrallah, studied in Iran, developing close links with Tehran during his theological studies in Qom before returning to Lebanon for a job for Hezbollah.

Reza Hashem Safieddine, Safieddine’s son, married Zeinab Suleimani, the daughter of Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani, an Iranian leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ Quds Force who was killed by a US airstrike in Baghdad in 2020. The wedding was widely reported and considered as a symbol of Iran’s deep connection with Hezbollah.

In May 2017, the US and Saudi Arabia declared Safieddine as a terrorist due to his position as leader in Hezbollah. Since 1997, the United States has designated Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, holding the group accountable for a number of attacks that killed hundreds of Americans, including the 1983 suicide truck terrorist attacks on the United States Embassy and Marine buildings in Beirut, the 1984 American Embassy annex attack in Beirut, and the 1985 hijacking of TWA Flight 847.
