Bloomberg News reported on Monday that the European Union is considering broadening its probe into whether Elon Musk’s social media network X violated its content moderation rules.
EU began investigating
The EU began investigating X, previously Twitter, in late 2023 for possible breaches of duties, including posts related to Hamas’ attacks on Israel, in its first examination under the EU’s Digital Services Act, or DSA.
“We are right now evaluating if the area of inquiry is large enough,” European Commission Vice President Henna Virkkunen told Bloomberg TV when questioned about the continuing X investigation.

According to Bloomberg, the bloc’s scrutiny of the social media platform has increased in recent months as Musk, now an adviser to President-elect Donald Trump, began endorsing far-right figures such as chancellor candidate Alice Weidel of the Alternative for Germany party ahead of the country’s Feb. 23 snap elections.
The commission is looking into whether a live-streamed chat between Musk and Weidel on X last week was unfairly enhanced to provide a political candidate an advantage, in violation of the DSA, according to the article.
Neither X nor the European Commission immediately responded to Reporters’ requests for comment.
In July, EU tech regulators found that X violated European Union online content laws and that its blue checkmark misled consumers, prompting Musk to add that he looked forward to a “very public battle in court, so that the people of Europe can know the truth.”
The European Commission’s charges, the first under the DSA, were imposed after a seven-month inquiry. The guidelines demand major online platforms and search engines to do more to combat unlawful information and threats to public security.
