Donald Trump took the oath of office as America’s 47th president on Monday. He took the oath of office in the Capitol, where he was accompanied by former President Joe Biden. This is the seventh time a president has been inaugurated on the federal holiday commemorating the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. On the occasion, Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama were sworn in for their second mandates.
The civil rights leader’s holiday was established over four decades ago. Every year, it is observed on the third Monday in January. The Constitution designates January 20 as Inauguration Day.

Donald Trump blasts former administration
He went on to say that January 20, 2025 is Liberation Day. Trump mentioned the attack on him during the campaign, saying that God saved him solely to ‘Make America Great Again’. Speaking mere feet away from former Vice President Biden, Trump issued a scathing attack of the federal government, claiming that it “cannot manage even a simple crisis at home.”
He mentions the California wildfires and the North Carolina flooding as examples of disasters in which he has consistently made false assertions. He also speaks about “a continuing catalogue of catastrophic events abroad” and illegal immigration. “My election is a mandate to completely and totally reverse a horrible betrayal,” as he stated.

Donald Trump discusses illegal migration and his political comeback

Trump emphasised the subject of illegal immigration, saying “all illegal entry will be immediately halted,” but provided little information on how he plans to do this. He stated that he would cease the practice of releasing migrants in the United States to seek asylum, known as “catch-and-release,” but did not specify how he would pay for the massive costs of imprisonment.
Notably, part of his proposal is based on restoring the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which required asylum claimants to wait in Mexico for hearings in US immigration court during his first term. Speaking of his successful comeback, he stated, “Several people thought it was not possible for me to stage such a historic political comeback, but as you see here today, here I am.”
