On Tuesday, Trudeau lambasted US President Donald Trump’s decision to implement tariffs, calling it a “very dumb thing to do.” He also questioned the logic of dealing with Vladimir Putin, whom Trudeau referred to as a “murderer and dictator,” while imposing tariffs on Canada, a close ally and partner.

“The USA started a trade war against Canada, its closest friend, ally, and friend,” Mr. Trudeau explained.

In reaction to the US duties, Canada will impose 25% tariffs on $155 billion in American imports, beginning with $30 billion in goods immediately and the remaining $125 billion in goods in 21 days. Trudeau also announced preparations to challenge the US’s “illegal actions” or tariffs at the World Trade Organisation, alleging a violation of the two countries’ free trade agreement.
Trudeau addressed the American public, saying that the tariffs will cause inflation and hurt American jobs, particularly in industries that rely on Canadian materials or consumers. He encouraged Trump to rethink, stating that the two countries should collaborate to create “prosperity for North Americans”.
The Canadian government also announced measures to assist Canadians affected by the trade war, such as increasing support for people who lose their employment and assisting businesses in remaining afloat. Trudeau pledged Canadians that the government would “relentlessly fight” to safeguard the economy.

He addressed the fentanyl issue, insisting that Trump’s suggestion that Canada is unwilling to combat it is “completely false.”

Trudeau also stated that Trump wants to see the Canadian economy fail in order to make it easier to annex Canada, reaffirming that this will never happen and that “Canada will never be the 51st state”.
Trudeau, Canada’s outgoing Prime Minister, has been in office since 2015 and is set to be replaced as head of the governing Liberal Party on Sunday.
“We are Canadians,” Trudeau continued. “We are going to battle and we are going to win.”
