On Tuesday, the Republican-led US House of Representatives passed legislation that would severely restrict transgender athletes’ participation in girls’ and women’s sports.
The legislation would prohibit transgender kids from competing on female teams at any school or university receiving government support, although it is unlikely to be adopted by the Senate and signed into law.
The measure defines sex as “based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth” and prohibits transgender athletes from participating in athletic activities “designated for women or girls.”

Republicans pounded Democrats on Transgender issues in US
Republicans pounded Democrats on transgender issues, particularly in youth and sports, ahead of the 2024 race, capitalising on a larger culture battle over LGBTQ rights.
Transgender persons, a small proportion of the population, have become more visible in the United States, raising problems about gender norms and fairness. As a result, many conservatives have rallied around female athletes.

“House Republicans yet again stood up for women,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said in a statement.
President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to put an end to “transgender lunacy.”

The bill passed the House with 218 votes, two of which were from Democrats.
In the Senate, however, Republicans are unlikely to secure enough Democratic support to overturn the upper chamber’s 60-vote threshold on most legislation.
Equality California, an advocacy organisation, blasted the bill as “yet another effort to deny transgender youth the dignity and respect they deserve.”
