World Patient Safety Day (WPSD), which is commemorated annually on September 17, aims to improve global awareness of patient safety issues. The day also encourages countries and international partners to work together to reduce patient harm.

World Patient Safety Day 2024: History and Importance

The World Health Organization (WHO) observes 11 official worldwide public health campaigns, including World Patient Safety Day. It was founded in May 2019 when the 72nd World Health Assembly passed resolution WHA 72.6 on ‘Global action on patient safety’. This global movement is built on a series of yearly Ministerial Conferences on Patient Safety, which started in 2016, as well as high-level advocacy and support from major international and national stakeholders.

Patient safety is concerned with minimizing and mitigating risks, errors, and injury to patients throughout the delivery of healthcare. Safety for patients is a healthcare discipline that evolved in response to the growing complexity of healthcare systems and the rise in patient injuries in healthcare settings.

The WHO’s observation

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), patient damage caused by adverse events is one of the top causes of morbidity and mortality globally. “According to the data at hand, clinics in low- and middle-income countries produce 134 million adverse events per year, resulting in 2.6 million fatality.” According to the World Health Organization, one out of every ten patients in high-income countries is wounded while in the hospital.

World Patient Safety Day Theme For 2024

The topic of World Patient Safety Day-2024 is enhancing diagnosis for patient safety, with the tagline “Get it right, make it safe!” On this day, family members and patients, health care staff members, healthcare leaders, lawmakers, and civil society representatives will all stress the importance of accurate and prompt diagnosis in enhancing patient safety. This year, WHO will illuminate Geneva’s iconic Jet d’Eau to symbolize its dedication to patient safety.

It emphasizes the vital need of accurate and prompt diagnosis for patient safety and better health outcomes.

Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021–2030

The World Health Organization has organized a global consultation titled “Improving Diagnostic Safety and Implementing the Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021-2030” in Geneva, Switzerland, with the goal of discussing strategies for improving diagnostic processes and reducing errors. It focuses on the success and challenges of executing the Global Patient Safety Action Plan (GPSAP) 2021-2030, based on the results of the Global Patient Safety Report (GPSR) 2024.

Important messages

The four key messages that WHO distributed on the occasion were: correct and timely diagnosis is the first step to preventative interventions and effective treatment, understanding the diagnostic process is critical to reducing errors, a variety of solutions are available to address diagnostic errors, and diagnosis is a team effort.

Background
