HMPV cases in India: India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reports that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has identified two Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in Karnataka. Both cases were discovered as part of ICMR’s normal surveillance for several respiratory viral infections. This endeavour is part of the council’s continuous efforts to identify and understand respiratory infections in India.
The HMPV cases detected are listed below
- A 3-month-old female newborn was admitted to Baptist Hospitals in Bengaluru with bronchopneumonia and diagnosed with HMPV. She was finally discharged.
- On January 3, 2025, an 8-month-old male baby tested positive for HMPV after being admitted to Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru for bronchopneumonia. The baby is presently healing.

What did ICMR say?
It’s worth noting that neither of the affected patients has ever travelled internationally. Despite the finding of both of these instances, the ICMR reported that there has been no significant increase in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases in the country. The Union Health Ministry is keeping a close eye on the issue through all available surveillance channels. Furthermore, the ICMR will track HMPV circulation trends throughout the year. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has provided regular updates on the situation in China in order to inform public health strategies.
