When is National Mathematics Day in 2024? What is its history and significance?

National Mathematics Day : Every year on December 22, India observes National Mathematics Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of the great mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. Dr. Manmohan Singh, then Prime Minister, established this day in 2012 to commemorate Ramanujan’s significant contributions to mathematics.

The day not only celebrates his legacy, but also promotes the relevance of math in everyday life. Accounting, finance, technology, scientific research, and economics are all examples of areas where mathematics has advanced significantly.

Srinivasa Ramanujan: Childhood Development and Contributions.

Ramanujan, who was born in 1887 in Erode, Tamil Nadu, to a Tamil Brahmin family, was well-known for his profound grasp of infinite series. His key contributions include number and mathematical function theories, as well as the discovery of the divergent series, Riemann series, hypergeometric series, and zeta functional equations.

National Mathematics Day : Celebrate Indian Mathematicians

National Mathematics Day also recognizes the achievements of other prominent Indian mathematicians, such as Aryabhata, Mahavira, Brahmagupta, and Bhaskara II.

Ramanujan’s Battle and Triumph

Despite living in extreme poverty, Ramanujan developed a strong interest in mathematics in childhood. He got information on his own by studying George Shoobridge Carr’s Synopsis of Elementary Results in Pure and Applied Mathematics. He published his first paper in the Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society in 1911 and went on to obtain a BA from Cambridge University in 1916. Ramanujan wrote multiple publications and was elected to the Royal Society for his work on elliptic functions and number theory.

Ramanujan died at the age of 32 on April 26, 1920, yet his contributions continue to affect many scientific fields. He is credited with discovering his own theorems and independently accumulating approximately 4,000 outcomes.

National Mathematics Day 2024 : Motivating the next generation of mathematicians

On National Mathematics Day, students are encouraged to think critically, participate in competitions, and attend educational events. The day’s goal is to pique people’s interest in mathematics and promote a better awareness of its importance in society.
