The Maharashtra government has approved the payment of Rs. 5.19 crore in outstanding wage arrears to 16 special education instructors, following severe pay delays under the Inclusive Education for Disabled at Secondary Stage (IEDSS) scheme.
What did the Maharashtra government do in this matter?
The ruling complies with repeated Bombay High Court directives, particularly in contempt proceedings, which require qualifying instructors to be paid in arrears. The court determined that the pay of special educators appointed under the plan should be paid as soon as possible.

The sanctioned amount will pay the educators’ wages from the time they are appointed until their employment ends in November 2023. The Maharashtra State Director of Education (Primary) has been responsible with reviewing and ensuring that pending payments are accurately calculated before disbursing monies straight into teachers’ bank accounts. Furthermore, the money will come from the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan’s 2024-25 budget.

This decision is likely to provide much-needed relief to the impacted educators, who have been waiting for wage checks despite fulfilling their teaching commitments under the IEDSS plan.
