Zakir Hussain, a tabla legend, is in critical condition, and his family invites people to pray for him

Zakir Hussain, the legendary tabla performer and multiple Grammy medal winner, is critically ill in a US hospital due to major heart issues, his family stated on Sunday.

His manager, Nirmala Bachani, confirmed that the artist had been in a San Francisco hospital for the past 2 weeks.

“At the moment, my brother is really ill. We are asking all of his supporters in India and throughout worldwide to pray for him and his health. But, as one of India’s biggest exports, don’t put him down just yet,” Zakir Hussain’s sister Khurshid Aulia informed news agency PTI, amid various rumors that her brother had died.

“I just want to ask the media not to spread false information about Zakir’s death. He is currently actively breathing. He is quite critical, yet he is still with us. He hasn’t gone yet. So I will ask (the media) not to perpetuate this rumour by writing or claiming that he has died. I feel terrible viewing all of this information on Facebook, which is completely incorrect,” she added.

Zakir Hussain is currently admitted to the ICU

“He is ill and is currently admitted to the ICU. We are all concerned about the situation,” Zakir Hussain’s partner and flute player Rakesh Chaurasia told the media agency.

Union Ministers, Chief Ministers, and others paid respect to the tabla master on X in the aftermath of his death, despite the fact that Zakir Hussain’s family had issued no formal comment.

The Ministry of Media and Information Ministry, which had previously posted about the performer’s death on X, then deleted it.

“I am Zakir Hussain’s nephew and he has not died. We request prayers for my Uncle’s health. Please remove this incorrect information. He is in critical condition, and we beg all of his followers around the world to pray for his recovery,” Ameer Aulia stated on X.

The performer worked together with a number of well-known international and Indian artists, but it was his 1973 performing arts project with English guitarist John McLaughlin, violinist L Shankar, and percussionist TH ‘Vikku’ Vinayakram that combined Indian classical and jazz elements in an unprecedented way.

The drummer, one of India’s most well-known classical musicians, received the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2023.
