Zakir Hussain, a tabla virtuoso, died on Today in a San Francisco hospital, his family reported. Hussain was admitted to a hospital in the United States after being diagnosed with severe heart problems. He was previously admitted to the intensive care unit of a San Francisco hospital, according to his buddy and flautist Rakesh Chaurasia.
According to the family, he died as a result of complications from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Hussain was aged 73. He had been in the hospital for the past two weeks and was transferred to the intensive care unit as his condition deteriorated.

Hussain had won four Grammys throughout his career, including three at the 66th Grammy Awards earlier this year.
Throughout his six-decade career, the musician collaborated with a number of well-known international and Indian artists, but it was his 1973 musical project with English guitarist John McLaughlin, violinist L Shankar, and percussionist TH ‘Vikku’ Vinayakram that combined Indian classical and jazz elements in a previously unknown way.
The drummer, one of India’s greatest classical musicians, was awarded the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2023.
