PM Modi : On the 150th anniversary day Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the ‘Mission Mausam’ initiative. He described IMD as a symbol of India’s scientific progress because it had helped crores of Indians for 150 years.

PM Modi declared that a postage stamp and a unique coin were also created to commemorate IMD’s achievements.

“In the past 150 years, IMD has not only helped crores of Indians, but it has also become a symbol of India’s scientific journey. Today, a postage stamp and a unique coin commemorating these achievements were also released. IMD also arranged the National Meteorological Olympiad to link youngsters with the 150-year journey, which thousands of students took part in. This would pique their interest in meteorology,” PM Modi told the audience at the IMD event.

He went on to say that as IMD celebrated its 150th anniversary, India embarked on a journey of advanced science and technology.
“These 150 years have not only been the journey of the country’s Weather Department, but also the journey of advanced science and technology in our country,” PM Modi said, adding that research and innovation in scientific institutions were part of the new India’s personality.
He went on to say that the number of contemporary infrastructures, such as Doppler weather radar, automatic weather stations, runway weather monitoring systems, and district-specific rainfall monitoring stations, has grown significantly.

“The advancement of any country’s scientific institutions demonstrates its scientific awareness. The character of the new India includes research and innovation in scientific institutes. IMD’s infrastructure and technologies have expanded at an unparalleled rate during the last decade. The number of advanced infrastructures, such as Doppler weather radar, automatic weather stations, runway weather monitoring systems, and district-specific rainfall monitoring stations, has expanded dramatically. These have also been updated. Meteorology is also fully utilising India’s space and digital technology.
Today, the government operates two meteorological observatories in Antarctica, named Maitri and Bharati. We’ve also created Mission Mausam to help India become a climate-smart nation. Mission Mausam also represents India’s commitment to a sustainable future and future readiness. PM Narendra Modi stated.
PM Modi expressed satisfaction on the occasion of Makar Sakranti
PM Modi expressed satisfaction on the occasion of Makar Sakranti, noting that IMD was created on the same day as his favourite festival.
“IMD was created on January 15, 1975, to commemorate Makar Sankranti. We all understand the significance of Makar Sankranti in India. I’m from Gujarat, and Makar Sankranti was my favourite event. Today, Gujaratis go to their terraces to sail kites. Whenever I was in Gujarat, I did the same. Today, the Sun enters Capricorn and progressively advances northward, a process known as ‘Uttarayan,'” he noted.
On the 150th anniversary of IMD’s founding, PM Modi also released a commemorative coin and the vision paper ‘Vision 2047’. He was accompanied by Union Minister Jitendra Singh, who praised IMD’s work, claiming that the accuracy of weather forecasts had increased by 50% over the past decade.
He stated that before PM Modi came to office, there were just a few radar networks, but the number has now been increased to 39.
