Pakistan Flights Banned : New Delhi announced a reciprocal closure of its airspace to all aircraft owned and operated by Pakistan, six days after Pakistan decided to ban all Indian carriers from using its airspace.
Pakistan Flights Banned Over India
Both India and Pakistan have prohibited each other’s aircraft from using their airspace till 11:59 p.m. UTC on May 23 (5:29 a.m. IST on May 24). These may be updated closer to the target date. “Pakistan registered aircraft or aircraft operated or leased by Pakistan airlines are not permitted to use Indian airspace,” according to a NOTAM, or Notice to Air Missions, issued by New Delhi. Among these are flights for the military.
The action comes amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan following the tragic terror incident in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, in which 26 tourists were killed by militants linked to Pakistan. The terrorist attack was religiously motivated and occurred just days after Pakistan’s army head, General Asim Munir, delivered an inflammatory speech.

With already poor relations escalating and Pakistan expecting military action from India, planes from Pakistan were avoiding Indian airspace. However, India has officially announced that its flights will not be permitted, even if they wish to.
Flights from Pakistan to southeast Asia and Oceania will now have to circumnavigate India. This will place a significant load on Pakistani airlines, who are already struggling financially, while also significantly extending trip time.
While India has declared Pakistani military diplomatic staff at its High Commission “persona non grata,” closed all of its border posts, cancelled all visas granted to Pakistani nationals, and put the Indus Waters Treaty in “abeyance,” Islamabad has also taken some diplomatic measures, such as suspending all trade, closing its airspace to Indian airlines, and citing the right to suspend “all bilateral pacts, including the Simla Agreement.”
Pakistan is concerned that India may launch a military offensive against those responsible for the terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir. India has promised to travel to “the ends of the Earth” to hunt terrorists and their supporters and punish them “beyond their imagination.”
