Justice Sanjiv Khanna : In an extremely significant event, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud has proposed Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the Supreme Court’s senior-most judge, as his successor. According to reports, the central government wrote a formal letter to the outgoing CJI last Friday demanding that he designate a replacement in accordance with the Memorandum of Procedure.
CJI DY Chandrachud will retire on November 10, 2024, after serving as India’s 50th Chief Justice for two years. He was appointed to the position on December 17, 2022, and has since become an important figure in the judiciary. Justice Chandrachud’s retirement will mark the end of an era, as he follows in the footsteps of his father, YV Chandrachud, the longest-serving Chief Justice of India (1978–1985).

Justice Sanjiv Khanna will be Chief Justice of India from November 10, 2024 to May 13, 2025. Justice Khanna, the senior-most judge behind Chief Justice Chandrachud, has been a prominent figure in the court since his appointment to the Supreme Court in January 2019. His selection aroused some debate because he was appointed ahead of 33 veteran judges. However, the case was quickly resolved, and he has since established himself as a respected judge.
Justice Khanna also has family ties to the famed Justice Hans Raj Khanna, who resigned during the 1970s Emergency in protest of the government’s policies. Following in his uncle’s footsteps, Justice Sanjiv Khanna has made significant contributions to India’s legal environment during his term.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna Successful Judicial Career
Justice Khanna was born on May 14, 1960, and has almost two decades of distinguished legal service. He spent 14 years as a judge in the Delhi High Court before being appointed to the Supreme Court, where he established a reputation for his skills in commercial law, taxation, and constitutional law. His decisions have had a considerable impact on Indian legal jurisprudence.
Justice Khanna, a Delhi University graduate, started his legal practice in 1983, focusing on a variety of subjects such as arbitration, commercial law, environmental law, and direct taxes. He began his career in Delhi’s district courts before moving on to the Delhi High Court and other judicial bodies.
