Indian students top source : After a 15-year hiatus, India has resumed its spot as the biggest source of foreign students in the United States for the 2023-24 school year, surpassing China. According to the Open Doors Survey on International Educational Exchange 2024, India had a 23% growth year on year, sending over 3.3 lakh students to the United States.
The development parallels India’s performance in the United Kingdom, where it surpassed China as the leading source of non-European Union students in 2022-23, with a 39% increase to 1.7 lakh students. The most obvious growth in Indian students in the US is in graduate courses, where there was a rise of 19 percent to almost two lakh students, and in optional practical training participation, which climbed by 41% to over 97,000.
In 2023, the United States earned $50 billion from international students, with Indians accounting for 20% of the total.
The majority of Indian students (64.5%) enrolled in public colleges, with the remainder 35.5% attending private universities.
According to global trends in international enrollment, the United States will host an all-time high of over 11 lakh international students in 2023-24, a seven percent rise over the previous year.

India and China together accounted for more than half (54%) of the total. However, although India’s numbers increased, China’s enrollment fell by 4% to 2.7 lakh.

According to International Student Economic Contribution 2023, Indian students made a considerable contribution to the US economy in 2023, totaling $11.8 billion.
According to the most recent report, 42.9% of Indian students are pursuing mathematics/computer science, followed by 24.5% studying engineering and 11.2% studying business/management.
Physical/life sciences is studied by 5.4% of Indian students.

56% of every foreign student in the United States majored in STEM subjects, with mathematics and computer science (25%) and engineering (19%) being the most common. Business and management (14%) and physical and life sciences (8%) come next.
International students traveled across 44 states, with the highest concentrations in California, New York, and Texas. Missouri (+35%), Michigan (+14%), and Illinois (+13%) had the biggest increases in student enrollment. The most frequently visited states for Indian students were Texas, New York, California, Massachusetts, and Illinois.
In 2023, international students made up 6% of the total higher education enrollment in the United States, providing more than $50 billion to the economy.

Sub-Saharan Africa had the highest growth rate of any region, increasing by 13% for the second consecutive year. Eight of the top 25 nations sending students to the United States set records: Bangladesh, Colombia, Ghana, India, Italy, Nepal, Pakistan, and Spain.
Scott Weinhold, a senior bureau official in the US State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, emphasized the wider effect of international education: “The knowledge gained while studying in the United States not only shapes the everyday lives of individuals but also impacts the future of our interconnected globe.”
“The ties generated between the US and foreign learners today are a basis for the future growth of trade, commerce, science, innovation and govt relations.”
Over 500,000 graduate students (5,02,291) attended classes in the United States in 2023-24, representing an 8% increase. Additionally, 2,42,782 students participated in OPT programs, a 22% increase, highlighting the growing trend of students seeking real work experience after graduation.
