Ferrari F80 exposed, replacing LaFerrari

Ferrari F80 : A replacement for the Ferrari LaFerrari hypercar has been unveiled. The Ferrari F80 is the Italian brand’s most powerful road car to date, featuring a 1,200hp hybrid V6 motor that incorporates technologies from the company’s Le Mans-winning 499P and Formula One cars.

surprisingly, Ferrari has debuted its new hypercar just weeks after McLaren unveiled the W1. The F80 is priced starting at GBP 3 million (about Rs 33 lakh) and will be produced in a limited run of 799 pieces, all of which have already sold.

Ferrari F80: powerplant

The F80 will be powered by a new 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine from Ferrari. It can rev up to 9,200rpm and has been fully reworked when compared to the one that drives the 296 GTB. Parts from the 499P Le Mans car have been added, resulting in 900hp, making it Maranello’s most powerful engine to date. Ferrari claims the unit is not any heavier than the 296 engine.

Three electric motors work in tandem with the V6 engine, two on the front axle and one on the back. This is Ferrari’s first in-house engine production. The front motors provide 142 horsepower each, while the rear motor is a ‘MGU-K’ energy recovery unit. The latter is designed similarly to Ferrari’s F1 cars and can recover up to 95 horsepower through braking to automatically fill power shortfalls. The F80 is also the first Ferrari to employ ‘E-turbos’, which leverages F1-derived technology to reduce latency and improve throttle response.

The hybrid technology generates 1,200 horsepower across all four axles. The manufacturer claims 0-100kph and 0-200kph rates of 2.15 and 5.75 seconds, respectively, making the F80 faster than the McLaren W1 and Mercedes-AMG One.

While there are three power modes (Hybrid, Performance, and Qualify) that may be selected via a switch on the steering wheel, there is no pure-electric mode. The F80, like the 296, is not a plug-in hybrid, and its 2.3kWh battery is used to augment power and run the vehicle for limited periods of time at low speeds.

Both the Performance and Qualify modes give you access to a Boost Optimisation function, which records the circuit during a sighting lap and then offers power boosts when needed in the next round.

Ferrari F80’s characteristics

Ferrari’s chief product development officer, Gianmaria Fulgenzi, told our News Editor that the underbody of the new F80 is significantly inspired by the brand’s F1 car, with massive barge boards used to channel air below. The aggressively designed nose is dominated by a massive ‘S-Duct’, which draws influence from the 499P and moves air across the cabin and to the rear. The black fascia across the nose, identical to that of the new 12Cilindri, has a slight lip at the top edge to direct air over the top of the cabin to the rear wing.

The dynamic rear wing adjusts not only its height but also its angle to maximize downforce while minimizing drag. The car’s back end can generate up to 590kg of downforce thanks to a massive rear diffuser. The F80 creates up to 1,000kg of downforce at 250kph, which is comparable to the McLaren W1 and just shy of an F1 car, which generates around 1,200kg at the same speed.

Ferrari F80 body

The F80 is slightly larger than the W1, measuring 4,840mm in length, 2,060mm in width, and 1,130mm tall. It is also 125kg heavier, at 1,525kg (dry). However, because to the use of lightweight materials (carbon fiber, titanium, and aluminum) in its construction, it is 60kg lighter than the LaFerrari and has a 50% stiffer chassis.

The cell and roof are carbon fiber, while the entrance and rear subframes are composed of aluminum. Ferrari also employed the front subframe to regulate heat, with the hollow structure serving as brake cooling ducts. Four 48V actuators power the F80’s dynamic suspension system. The elements of the double-wishbone configuration are created via 3D printing.

Ferrari F80: interior and exterior design

While similarities to the F40, Enzo, and vintage 330 P3 may be seen, designer Flavio Manzoni claims that the design is “absolutely new” and avoids “anything nostalgic”. He cited spaceships and science fiction as inspirations for the car’s design.

The passenger compartment has an asymmetrical configuration that prioritizes the driver, while there have been talks about making the F80 a single-seater. The majority of controls and functions on the new ovoid steering wheel and slim center console are physical and, according to Ferrari, simple to use while driving.
