India has banned all imports from Pakistan in response to tensions resulting from the Pahalgam terror assault.

India-Pakistan tensions: In yet another strong move against Pakistan, India has banned all imports from the neighboring country, citing growing tensions following the Pahalgam terrorist attack.The decision was made in the interests of national security and public policy, the administration stated, emphasizing that it applies to all products in transit from Pakistan.

“Direct or indirect? Import and transit of all items originating in or exported from Pakistan, whether freely importable or otherwise permitted, is prohibited with immediate effect, pending further orders. This restriction is enforced for the sake of national security and public policy. Any exception to this rule will require prior clearance from the Government of India, according to a Commerce Ministry announcement.

Following the Pahalgam attack, the Wagah-Attari crossing, India’s primary trading route with Pakistan, was already closed.

Imports from Pakistan were mostly pharmaceuticals, fruits, and oilseeds. It has dropped in the years since the 2019 Pulwama incident, with India putting a 200% tax on Pakistani exports. According to reports, it accounted for less than 0.0001% of total imports in 2024-25.

India-Pakistan tensions : Terrorists killed at least 26 victims.

On April 22, terrorists slaughtered at least 26 civilians, including a Nepalese tourist and a local pony guide operator, in Jammu and Kashmir’s gorgeous Baisaran meadows. Relations between the two countries deteriorated as terrorist links to Pakistan revealed.

India quickly suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a critical water-sharing agreement agreed by the two countries in 1960, alleging “sustained cross-border terrorism”. India may now divert or prevent water from the Indus River system from flowing to Pakistan, cutting off their primary source of water supplies and affecting tens of millions of people.

India also revoked all visas for Pakistani nationals. People living in India were given a deadline to leave the country. This included the medical visas. In reaction, Pakistan threatened to suspend all bilateral agreements with India, including the Simla deal. The two countries’ diplomatic relations have also deteriorated.

The situation is also tight at the Line of Control and the International Border, with Pakistani troops firing at Indian installations in an attempt to antagonize India. India effectively responded to all cross-border shootings.

India has often accused Pakistan of harbouring terrorists and providing a safe haven for them across the border. Home Minister Amit Shah had stated that Delhi would not hold any trade negotiations with Islamabad until terrorism was eradicated from Jammu and Kashmir.
