Punjab government give 300-unit Electricity Free Update
The Punjab government started the 300-unit free power initiative, and there has been a significant surge in new connections. There was competition in every area for incorrectly installing meters, and one attempt was made to double the benefit of the free power policy by installing two meters in a residence.
With the installation of new meters, electricity demand skyrocketed, increasing the government’s subsidy burden. Because of new connections, the demand for electricity surged dramatically, causing Powercom management to face numerous challenges. As a result, Powercom has decided to take action against the meters that were installed incorrectly, allowing the department to receive future relief.
On the one hand, taking action against incorrectly installed meters will benefit Powercom, while the government will save crores of rupees per month. As a result, Powercom has launched a checking campaign in which meters put incorrectly are removed. In addition, in preparation for the winter season, the department has begun to improve the electricity system and is focusing on pending projects such as upgrading cables and updating transformers. This will cut electricity complaints in the upcoming summer season, providing significant relief to consumers.

Hundreds of connections are operational in each location, with 4-5 kW load on 1-2 kW stationary load. Due to such connections, the department is unable to determine the precise load used in the region, causing the transformers to overload. Transformers are only put in the designated areas based on the load of the department’s meters. However, the electrical consumers of the concerned transformers consume far more electricity than the traction load.
As a result, issues begin to arise. According to officials, the transformer did not withstand a significant load before blowing its fuse. The department intends to tighten the grip on such consumers. According to officials, consumers who use more over the permissible load should increase their load or face a fee during the departmental investigation.
Officials added that under the pretense of a free electricity initiative, many electricity clients consuming more than 300 units are failing to pay their bills, which is causing problems for Powercom. As a result, many connections have been terminated during the previous few days, and action is being taken against people who have not paid their bills. Officials add that the bills of individuals who have not paid are always pending, and the amount is growing; it will be retrieved as quickly as feasible.
