Mike Waltz: According to a person familiar with the subject, US the next president Donald Trump has requested India Caucus Chairman Mike Waltz, a retired Army National Guard officer and war veteran, to serve as his national security adviser.
The national security adviser, who is not subject to Senate confirmation, wields considerable power. Waltz will be tasked with briefing Trump on critical national security issues such as ongoing efforts to provide weapons to Ukraine, growing concerns about Russia and North Korea’s growing alliance, persistent attacks by Iran-backed proxies in the Middle East, and efforts to broker a cease-fire between Israel, Hamas, and Hezbollah.

Waltz, a three-term Republican congressman from east-central Florida, was the first Green Beret elected to the US House and was convincingly reelected last week. He formerly served as chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness, as well as a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the Permanently Standing Committee on Intelligence.
Waltz, a Trump supporter who formerly served as a colonel in the National Guard, has condemned Chinese actions in the Asia-Pacific and underlined the importance of the US getting ready for a future conflict in the region.
Waltz is a staunch Trump supporter who has endorsed attempts to overthrow the 2020 election. He is considered a hawk on China, having urged for a boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing due to its role in the spread of COVID-19 and its continuous abuse of the minority Muslim Uighur people.
Waltz, a graduate of Virginia Military Institute, which was was a Green Beret. He spent four years in the active-duty Army before joining the Florida Guard. He served in the Guard on multiple combat missions in Afghanistan, the Middle East, and Africa, receiving four Bronze Stars, two of which were for heroism. He also worked as a policy consultant at the Pentagon for Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates, the military commanders.

Mike Waltz is co-chair of the House Caucus on India and Indian Americans. The India Caucus is the House of Representatives’ largest country-specific bipartisan alliance of members dedicated to developing relations between the world’s two largest democratic nations.
Waltz, as co-chair of the republican Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, was instrumental in enabling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech on Capitol Hill during his 2023 visit to the United States. Waltz stated last year that India is the world’s largest democracy and a key strategic partner for the United States. “That’s why I am honored to serve as the Co-Chair of the House of Representative India Caucus this Congress to ensure we retain this alliance, strengthen the economic, political, and security ties between our two nations, and protect democracies in Asia and globally,” the elected figure stated.
Waltz is also a member of the Republican China Strategy Force, and he believes the US military is not properly prepared as it should be in the case of an Indo-Pacific conflict. He chastised the Biden administration for a failed exit from Afghanistan in 2021, and Waltz has publicly supported Trump’s foreign policy positions.
What might this entail for the military?
Waltz, who was vying for the position of defense secretary, may have irritated certain members of the military. As a Florida representative, he has led a conservative effort opposing the teaching of certain racist views and has chastised military authorities for doing so.
He has attacked the politicization of the military during President Joe Biden’s administration.
In 2023, Waltz presented legislation in Parliament that would have compelled a review of “unneeded and political DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) programs” in the military and “restore a merit-based culture to our ranks.” Waltz chastised the United States Military Academy at West Point for teaching critical race theory, which believes that the legacy of slavery and segregation have created an unequal playing field for Black Americans.
Trump is projected to have a significantly more negative image of his military leaders in his second term, having faced Pentagon opposition over everything from his skepticism of NATO to his willingness to deploy troops to crush protesters on US streets.
