Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi: We must compete, work together, coexist, challenge, and contest with China

Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi emphasized the complexity of dealing with tensions with China, stating that India must compete, work together, coexist, confront, and struggle with China.

Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwived remarked

He mentioned that “China has been capturing our interest for quite some time.” China wants you to compete, interact with one another, coexist, confront, and contest.”

“It is stable, yet it is abnormal and reactive. We want the situation to return to what it was before April 2020, whether in regards to ground occupancy or the buffer zones that have been established,” he said. He emphasized the military’s readiness, saying, “Until that situation returns to normal, the situation continues to be sensitive, and we are fully logistically poised to face any situation.” Trust has become the most significant casualty.”

When questioned about the status of current talks, Dwivedi stated that both sides had held around 17 Corps Commander-level conversations since April.

“We came a long way. Now, when we are in a difficult circumstance, both parties must find a win-win solution,” he added.

Meanwhile, earlier in September, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) presented an update on India-China ties, describing them as continuing discussion and efforts to resolve problems through the Working Mechanism for Consultancy and Coordination (WMCC) conferences.

According to MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, S Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, has constantly addressed the relationship in various platforms, emphasising transparency and providing frequent information on the status of WMCC deliberations.

When asked about External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s remark that 75% of disengagement problems between India and China have been resolved, Jaiswal responded, “The Other Affairs Minister has commented on India-China relations on several occasions. He recently gave a speech in Berlin. He also discussed it when attending an event in New Delhi. We’ve also been keeping you updated on the status of our conversations with the WMCC.

During his trip to Geneva, Jaishankar reviewed the relationship among India and China, noting that “75% of disarmament problems are fixed.”

On August 29, India and China attended the 31st conference of the WMCC in Beijing, where the 2 nations agreed to work together to keep peace and tranquility on land in border zones in accordance with suitable bilateral deals and protocols.

From May 2020, when Chinese soldiers attempted to forcefully change the status quo on LAC in eastern Ladakh, both sides have been positioned in forward positions near Patrolling bone 15, which became a bone of contention following the Galwan encounter.

Since 2020, around 50,000 Indian soldiers have been positioned at forward positions along the LAC, armed with modern weapons, to prevent any efforts to unilaterally change the status quo.

General Dwivedi also discussed China building towns along the LAC.

The political side is sending out favorable signals, but we must understand that the diplomatic side is providing options and possibilities,” he said. However, when it comes to ground operations, it is up to military leaders on both sides to make those decisions.

Clashes between India and China erupted in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley in June 2020, marking a watershed moment in the two countries’ relationship. Despite 21 rounds of talks at the Corps Commander level, significant points of contention in eastern Ladakh, such as Depsang and Demchok, have yet to be resolved.

“The situation is stable, but uncommon and sensitive. If this is the situation, what should we want? “We want the situation that existed prior to April 2020 to be reestablished,” General Dwivedi remarked. “In dealing with China, you must compete, work together, coexist, confront, and contest. As a result, until that condition is restored, the situation will remain sensitive, and we are fully operationally prepared to deal with any contingency. The most significant loss has been trust.
