WTC points standings update following Sri Lanka’s 2-0 victory over New Zealand

WTC points standings update : Sri Lanka won the second and last Test versus New Zealand 2-0 at Galle, securing the series. The tourists had fought hard in the first Test, but Sri Lanka dominated the last game of the series, winning by an innings and 154 runs. Sri Lanka’s PCT increased from 50 to 55.55 as a result of this victory, propelling them to third place. They are currently very close to second-place the nation of Australia, which has a PCT of 62.5.

Meanwhile, New Zealand has slid from fourth to seventh on the list, with a PCT of 37.5 down from 42.85. This is their fifth loss in eight WTC matches, and their hopes of reaching the WTC final are rapidly dwindling. The New Zealand national team have three away and home matches available versus India and England.

Sri Lanka has a realistic opportunity of winning the WTC final with four Test matches remain in this cycle, two against South Africa and two vs Australia, both at home and away. They will need to win at least one test in South Africa to have a chance of finishing in the top two of the WTC points table.

Meanwhile, play in the second Test against India and Bangladesh has been delayed due to a damp outfield on the third day at Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium. This game is heading toward a deadlock, and if it does, the scenarios for the WTC final will undoubtedly change.

Sri Lanka increased their points percentages (PCT) from 50 to 55.55 % with their fifth victory in nine World Cup 2023-25 matches. Meanwhile, the Kiwis dropped from fourth to seventh place, trailing England, Bangladesh, and South Africa. Pakistan and the West Indies take the final two berths.

2-time finalists India and defending champions Australia are leading the WTC standings, with PCTs of 71.67 and 62.50, respectively. India’s PCTs could dip to 68.18 if they draw the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur.

Sri Lanka will next play two Tests in South Africa before visiting Australia in January. The Black Caps will take on India in a 3-match Test series starting on October 16 in Bengaluru.
