Nicholas Pooran : Is Nicholas Pooran the best T20 batsman right now? Caribbean lefty shatters Rizwan’s world record

Nicholas Pooran of the West Indies made history on Friday by breaking Pakistan’s Mohammed Rizwan’s Guinness record for the most T20 runs in a calendar year.

The southpaw achieved this remarkable milestone while playing for Trinbago Knight Riders versus Barbados Royals in the  CPL  2024.

Pooran extended his impressive record in the league and T20s this season with a brief but powerful 15-ball cameo of 27 runs, including four boundaries and a six. His runs were at a strike rate of 180.00. This knock, combined with fine scores from skipper Kieron Pollard (42 in 27 balls), Keacy Carty (32 in 34 balls), and Andre Russell (31 in 12 balls), propelled the team to 175/7, which they successfully defended by restricting Barbados to 145/9 despite excellent knocks from Alick Athanaze (44 in 33 balls) and David Miller (30 in 15 balls).

Nicholas Pooran is the highest T20 run-scorer this year

Pooran had the highest T20 run total this year, scoring 2,059 runs in 66 matches and 65 innings at an average score of 42.02, a strike rate of 160.85, with a best match score of 98. He’s made 14 half-centuries this year. This year, he has 139 fours and 152 hits.

Pooran has 312 runs in 9 innings of CPL 2024, with a batting average of 39.00, an on-base percentage of 175.28, and a top score of 97.He has two half-centuries and is the competition’s fourth-highest run scorer.

Rizwan set a record in 2021, scoring 2,036 runs in 48 T20s at an average of 56.60 and a strike rate of more than 132, including a century and 18 fifties. His top score was 104*.

Nicholas Pooran has demonstrated outstanding batting

Pooran has been in outstanding batting form in numerous T20 events and contests this year. Some of his most impressive performances came in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, when he scored 499 runs at a scoring rate of 62.37, including three fifties, and had an overall strike rate of 178.21, with a best score of 75. He ended with the eighth-most runs.

Pooran was the sixth-highest run-maker in the T20 World Cup, scoring 228 runs in seven innings at an average of 38.00, including a fifty and a maximum score of 98.

Pooran led MI Emirates to win in this year’s UAE International League T20 season, amassing 709 runs in 20 matches at an average of 50.64, with four fifties and a strike rate of 155.14. He finished the event with the third most runs.

In addition, he performed admirably in SA20 2024 in South Africa (86 runs in three matches, including a fifty), Major League Cricket (MLC) in the United States (180 runs in seven matches, including a fifty, average of 30.00, strike rate of 125.00), and The Hundred in the United Kingdom (227 runs in seven innings, average of 45.40, strike rate of 150.33, three fifties, fourth-highest run-getter).

In 13 T20Is for the West Indies, he has scored 384 runs at an average of 34.90, a strike rate of over 157, two half-centuries, and a top score of 98.

Early in CPL 2024, Pooran broke renowned Chris Gayle’s world record of 135 sixes in T20 cricket in a calendar year and just became the first player to reach 150 sixes.

This year, Pooran’s nearest run-scorers are South Africa’s Reeza Hendricks (1,555 runs in 59 matches at an average of 31.10, with 14 fifties and a strike rate of over 128), Pakistan’s Babar Azam (1,480 runs in 36 matches at an average of 46.25, with a century, 13 fifties, and a strikes rate of 132.73), and Travis Head (1,442 runs in 39 matches at an average of 41.20, with a century and 13 fifties, with a strikes rate of 182.07).
